First Fall Weekend

Even though it technically wasn't Fall yet, we had our first Fall-like weekend of September 11th. We had a little get together to watch the Georgia game and also so the kids could play. The Dobbinses, The Hancock's and The Green's were able to come over and hang out for a few hours. Donald picked up some chickens and and Boston Butt for the smoker. I made slaw and he also made these killer baked beans below. He was so excited about this skillet full of yumminess.  He smoked the poblano peppers that he put in them. He crumbled andouille sausage and sauteed it with onions. Added a large can of Bush's Baked Beans, the poblanos, then topped with slicked smoked andouille and baked them. I don't eat baked beans and should have actually tried them, because he and everyone else said they were amazing.

Britany made banana pudding which was also fantastic. Stella approved.

And was so sweet to share with Lily.

Donald finally got his "white whale"-the limb overhanging our fire pit. It's been driving him nuts since we put the thing in five +/- years ago. It's the lowest hanging limb on our huge oak tree in the backyard, which doesn't sound like a big problem, but the damn thing doesn't loose it's leaves. The tree does, but that one branch does not. They basically don't fall off until the new ones coming in force them off. It's so weird. As a result, we really can't have many bonfires for fear of setting the whole tree on fire.

He backed the truck up to the tree about four dozen times and tried this way and that to get it off. He climbed onto the back of the truck and sawed. Then he climbed a tall ladder  and sawed some more. Then he put a short ladder on the back of the truck cover, climbed it and sawed again. Then he pulled on it while he sawed. He ended up putting a towing strap around the thing and pulling it down with his truck. It didn't want to give though and actually lifted the end of the truck up off the ground, but finally it snapped, right where it connected to the tree. Only problem is, our chainsaw is still at the beach, so we have a huge limb just hanging out back for a while. Whatever, he was happy.

So back to the first bonfire of the season. We grabbed chairs from the porch and a blanket and gathered 'round. We roasted marshmallows for s'mores and just enjoyed the warmth and glow from the fire. Everyone packed up and left not long after the s'mores so Donald, Stella and I were left to enjoy it. Stella ended up falling asleep with her head in my lap while I rocked in the glider. Donald and I sat around talking for a while, then finally headed in. I really didn't want to go in, but was cold and only had on shorts and a small blanket that I was sharing with Stella.  Stella really loved the fire and marshmallow roasting which I loved and can hardly wait to take her camping soon.

Sunday morning, Donald played in a golf tournament in Douglasville. Stella and I went for a walk down at Nickajack Creek. It was perfect. We saw lots of kids, families and puppy dogs out enjoying the fabulous weather.

We even found a few more caterpillars, but not like the trip before where we counted over a dozen. Stella had to kiss this one, of course.

Of course, my loves-to-be-naked child decided to hike topless.

And walk the balance beam naked.

We saw so many kids in carriers and thankfully I had enough sense to bring our Tula. She put in to ride on my back so I carried her for a while.

That afternoon we hung out in the shade by the fire pit and Stella had to go potty. So then the other half of her body ended up naked outside.

We actually were chilly out here and I didn't mind it one bit. We welcomed it with open arms!
